about
“Though I love this song,” said frontman and principal songwriter Malte Zumbansen, it is really, for him, “a failed exercise...”
He explains:
“Having become enamoured with folk music a few years ago, but confused by the way that contemporary folk often seemed to be something completely based in nostalgia, I started writing this song. I wanted to ask: why are we still singing about the same things, and using the same imagery, that folks 50 years ago were using, when our lived reality is a completely different one?
In the end, Maureen became a folk song like most others, which talks about love, landscapes and lonesomeness. It’s safe to say that I failed, and I’m so glad it did.”
Maureen was recorded live off the floor in the early summer of 2023 by William Poulin at Sud-Ouest Recording Service in Montreal.
lyrics
Was I a folksinger
Singing in the shower
Singing so softly to the walls and the flowers
Am I a folksinger
If I was a ghost
Never broken hearted by the one I love the most
Oh Maureen, Oh Maureen
Now all those other singers
And all their other songs
Singing about the guy who's gone and done them wrong
But if there's a finger pointing
Well they're pointing it at me
If I can't play the lonely man
Then which man might I be
Oh Maureen, Oh Maureen
So am I a folksinger
Buried in the dirt
Of work, noise, and lies, that's contemporary dirt
But the skyline was my mountain
And you were my stream
I'm drinking your cool water, and your love is my light beam
Oh Maureen, Oh Maureen
Being a folksinger
Might be sitting here with you
I'm singing when I'm talking, won't you say a note or two
Oh Maureen, Oh Maureen
Searching for universal
But the shopping's in my hand
Staring through the window at a map of Japan
Cold, cold water
Dripping from my drain
And standing in the shower, is me standing in the rain
Oh Maureen, Oh Maureen
